WAPP's new simulator is moving beyond the preparation stage and into its first real in-game environment. Work has started on the geometry of the first station, which is being rebuilt from the ground up for the new project.
Original references, a new environment
We were able to recover the original WAPP projects together with their models, textures, trains, most of the audio and other materials. This gives us a valuable foundation to work from, but it does not mean that the old environments can simply be placed into the new game.
The original models were created for a very different generation of technology and with workflows that are no longer suitable for modern real-time graphics. Today they mainly serve as blueprints and reference data, helping us reconstruct proportions, layouts, connections between individual parts and many smaller details.
Structure first, detail later
These screenshots show a very early stage of development. The grey surfaces are not the final appearance of the station. Right now, the main focus is the underlying geometry: the platform, structural elements, ceilings, passages and the overall shape of the space.
Once the dimensions and proportions are right, we can move on to detailed modelling, new materials and textures, lighting and optimisation for the target hardware. Building the environment this way gives us a much cleaner and more maintainable foundation than trying to repair the original models directly.
Development is getting underway
The interest we have seen so far gives us a good reason to keep moving forward, and the first actual parts of the simulator are now being built. We are still not announcing the exact route or target platforms. More details will be revealed gradually as the project takes shape.
This is only the beginning. We will continue sharing more development and modelling updates along the way.
